[tab name=”Overview”]
Oleo pine resins are derived from tapping living pine trees. The process is similar to that of rubber tapping. Oleo pine resins are soft when compared to the other resins obtained from the tree. They are a mixture of an oil and a resin, unlike other hard resins that are a mixture of gum and resin.

Properties of Oleo pine resins:

  • Typically, oleo pine resins are made of oil, a carboxylic acid component, and an oxygenated product of terpene.
  • They are soluble in alcohol, but they are not soluble in water.
  • Their appearance varies from light to dark shades of brown.

Preparation of Oleo pine resins:

These Oleo pine resins, when made to undergo distillation, separate into gum rosin and turpentine, which have several good applications themselves. On completion of tapping the resin, it is collected and transported for processing. Once processed, it can be packaged and is ready to be marketed.

[tab name=”Application”]
The various applications of oleo pine resins are as listed below:

Therapeutic applications
Oleo pine resins are largely used for therapeutic purposes because they contain essential oils that have healing effects. These oils also exude a pleasant aroma, hence they are also used in incense and cosmetic products such as bath oils.

Paint Industry
Oleo pine resins have excellent solubility in alcohol and solvents. Apart from that, they also have a high refractive index that gives them a glossy shine. These two properties make them suitable for use in varnishes and paints.

Polymer Industry
Oleo pine resins are used to make glue because of their sticky property. And these are preferred over other
resins because these are soft. Their water resistant property is also exploited and so these are used in
sealants.

Eye   Causes eye irritation.
Skin    Causes skin irritation.
Ingestion
Causes disgestive tract irritation. The toxicological properties of this substance have not been fully investigated.
Inhalation
Causes respiratory tract irritation. The toxicological properties of this substance have not been fully investigated.

FIRST AID MEASURES
Eyes
Rinse eyes with a large quantity of water for at least 15 minutes, occasionally lifting the upper and lower eyelids, consult oculist immediately.
Skin
Remove contaminated clothing and shoes ASAP, wash affected area with plenty of soap and water for at least 15 minutes, consult surgeon immediately.
Ingestion
Rinse mouth with plenty of milk or water (only if victim is conscious and alert). Get medical aid immediately.
Inhalation
Remove victim from exposure to fresh air immediately, if not breathing, give artifical respiration; if breathing is difficult, give medical oxygen. Get medical aid immediately.

FIRE- FIGHTING MEASURES
Special Fire-Fighting Procedures :
As material emits toxic fumes under fire conditions, wearing a self-contained breathing apparatus in pressure-demand and protecting clothing to prevent contacts from eyes and skin is strongly recommended.
Extinguishing Media :
Water spray, carbon dioxide, dry chemical powder or appropriate foam. For safety reasons do not use full water jet.

ACCIDENTAL RELEASE MEASURES

General Information:
Use proper personal protective apparatus as indicated in.

EXPOSURE CONTROLS / PERSONAL PROTECTION

Spills/Leaks:
Cover with an inert material (e.g. dry-lime, sand, earth or soda ash), then place in suitable and tightly closed containers using non-sparking tools, transport outdoors. Avoid open flames or sources of ignition (e.g. pilot lights on gas hot water heater). Ventilate area  and wash spill site after material pickup is complete. Dispose of in accordance with current laws and regulations.

HANDLING & STORAGE

Handling:
Measures indicated in Section 8 should be taken to prevent contact from skin and eyes. Vapors may form explosive mixtures with air, provide suitable air extraction ventilation in the work areas. Avoid contact with heat, sparks and flames, smoking should not be permitted in work areas.
Storage:
Keep away from heat, sparks and flames. Store in a tightly closed and suitable container, containers should be stored in a cool and dry place.

EXPOSURE CONTROLS / PERSONAL PROTECTION
Engineering Controls:
Use adequate ventilation to keep the vapor concentration in work areas out from explosion limits.Protective Equipment:
Eyes
Wear chemical safety goggles if splashing is possible, wash contaminated goggles before reuse.
Skin
Wear Compatible chemical-resistant gloves and appropriate protective clothing, wash contaminated gloves and clothing before reuse.
Inhalation
Do not breath vapors. In confined or poorly ventilated areas, the use of an appropriate respiratory protection may be required.
